This will check Java in your browser. Do you see

Yes all works fine slideshow effect....

Good.

2) Here is a simple little 'desktop' app.

Yes the Jotpad window opens and I can type in it.

Excellent.

So does this mean Java is working fine ..

Yes, absolutely. GArlington pretty much got it
completely correct in their two posts. (The only
'mistake' they made was attributing any of the
conclusions in those messages, to me!)

...despite not finding the main class
whatever that is?

The 'main' class is the very first class (bit of program)
used in any Java Desktop application. You ran a
Java Desktop Application in JotPad. JotPad has a
'main' class, and the JRE (Java) found it just fine,
and showed you JotPad on screen.

How then can I remove this dialogue box?

Find whatever Java program that *is* causing
the error, and disable it, or perhaps remove it
entirely.

GArlington's first post pretty much summed it up,
I think, ..

..but note that this is no longer in my area of
immediate expertise.

OTOH, I note that Roedy has joined the thread, I
don''t have time to check his links, but can note
that he is the person I would most welcome seeing
weigh in to *any* 'setup/installation' type question.

I think that few would know more about that side
of it, short of Sun's (makers of Java) own engineers,
and even then, I suspect he knows a few tricks they
do not.

Checkout his links and you might find the 'easy'
answer.
