64 bit plugin is expected with Java 7, which should be
around the corner now.
Or use virtualization to create a guest 32-bit OS inside your 64-bit
environment. I've also successfully used JWS in a 32-bit Java running on a
64-bit Linux / Firefox. With some effort. No go for applets, though.
I use a 32 and 64bit JDK on 64bit Linux. I also manage to use the 32bit plugin
for Firefox (I install a 32bit version of Firefox). Applets appear to work ok.
Do you have a full 32bit compatibility option installed, with all the 32bit
libraries? Our servers run 64bit RHEL4 with full 32bit runtime and development
options installed. I simply removed the default 64bit Firefox RPM, downloaded
the 32bit RPM from RHN and installed that. Then I linked the 32bit JRE plugin
to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. This is, of course, totally unsupported by RedHat.
The latest Firefox which RedHat provide is 1.5 (they seem to have some aversion
to Firefox 2, and intend to skip straight to Firefox 3), but I have also
downloaded Firefox 2 from mozilla.org as a tarball and installed that. This
also display applets ok.
