ssh tunnel + thunderbird that is all you need.

This is hardly a solution applicable to everyone. First, they would
need to have a machine with a fixed IP address -- that generally means
an expensive business-class connection, with fees upwards of $100/mo.
Then there's installing and configuring a server -- not for the faint
of heart. In this instance, where the server explicitly grants shell
access on the box, any security hole or misconfiguration compromises
your home computer in a serious way, so it's particularly not for the
faint of heart.

You can use SSH for binary data with no difficulty, and I've run it to my home
machine with no need for anything expensive except my internet connection.
There certainly are no character encoding issues with SSH /per se/.

I asked Sanjay about their use of SSH, but I speculate that the answer will
involve logging into their home machine as if VPN, then using the home machine
to connect to their news source, viewing the whole thing remotely over SSH.
