I like how Windows Media Player works. It has a fancy skinned interface (in
fact several of them), but it also allows you to just run in regular old
Windows look and feel.

I agree that a lot of software is starting to take on it's own non-Windows
look and feel. We struggle with that all the time. People want their
software to look different, newer, hip, all that. Even Microsoft does this.
Every time a new version of Office comes out there is a new kind of toolbar
or menu or ribbon bar or something. Fortunately, they make it work with the
accessibility guidelines and it always plays well in a Windows environment.

You may have your opinion, but like it or not, more and more popular apps
use skinned interfaces, especially consumer apps. And no, not all of them
use tiny fonts that you would find objectionable. These apps are designed
by leading edge design firms that are paid a lot of money to make a highly
usable, in addition to a highly attractive, interface.

More and more the trend is for PC apps to have the same quality of
graphical effects that you see in a Hollywood move or TV show. XAML will
make it even better. You don't complain that the fonts they choose are
too small, do you? The same for PC apps. The designer is going to have
control, and mostly they do a terrific job.
