Could you elaborate on the "may have to" part? Why would you possibly
_have to_ do that? I am genuinely curious to learn this just so I can

One possible reason is that later versions of the compiler do not
officially support older platforms as a target. If you have to support
these platforms, then I would say using a newer version of the compiler
is a bigger risk than using an older compiler on a new development platform.

Using the VC6 compiler on Vista is unlikely to result in compilation
errors. Rather there might be problems with the IDE (UAC related,
perhaps). Indeed this happened with XP also; XP SP2 broke the JIT
debugging in VC6, but everything else seems to work OK.
