he was building in Release mode? As far as I can tell, before the
screenshots, there was nothing to indicate either what configuration
he was using, nor where the breakpoints are.

Hehe, interesting. My predication would have been running it with
Start Without Debugging (Ctrl+SHIFT+F5).

The screenshots show _some_ breakpoints being hit. How would that be
possible if the program is not running under debugger?
