Well, as far as books go:

"ATL Internals" by Brent Rector and Chris Sells, Addison Wesley

It even has a second edition by now.

However, what you really need after you are through with the
book (and there's no alternative to the above book really) is to
read the ATL source code in your VC installation directory.
Personally I haven't read the book, I've read ATL sources as
needed.
