Web services are code just like any other code.
You will need a Java web container like Tomcat and you will
make life a lot easier for yourself by using a toolkit like
restlet instead of handcoding a servlet.
I have already created a web service with reslet and this is a great
framework!

A login web service is like any other web service call.
But login is not RESTful.
HTTP and SSL authentication are perfectly compatible with rest. They're
orthogonal to it.
You should check in each call.
That's exactly how HTTP or SSL authentication works.
