with no validity-checking at all.
Here's a little experiment you might want to try. See
if you can explain why the compiler is happy with the first
method but complains about the second:

throw new IllegalArgumentException("bad x");

int method2(int x) {
if (x > 0) return x;
assert false : "bad x";
}
