Maybe you should see Ruby and just forget about Java.
Well, I can take a course in Java, but no local colleges offer Ruby (yet).
Is that even relevant?
I never took a Java course in college yet. In fact, Java wasn't invented when
I went to college. I never took a Javascript course, and I can do all right
there. When I learn Ruby, it won't be in college. I didn't learn C in
college. I didn't learn C++ in college. I didn't learn SQL in college. I
didn't learn IBM 360 assembler in college. I didn't learn xBase in college.
I didn't learn BASIC in college, let alone Visual Basic or HP Business Basic.
I did learn FORTRAN in college, but most of the useful parts I didn't learn
until after I graduated. Those are all languages I've been paid to use (but
certainly not all the languages I've been paid to use). If I'd had to go to
college to learn them, I'd never have been able to hold a job as a programmer,
and I'd have spent money to learn instead of earning as I learned.
Sooner or later you'll have to forget about college, and move on to learning.
