Re: The people who write Java are assholes

Really? Are you absolutely sure that was a valid Java update?
The latest Java update I installed certainly did not make any changes to
my update settings. It remains set to "Notify me: Before downloading".
The interval and time of check also remain unchanged.
Suddenly, for two
nights in a row, at 3:30 am est, the little java logo comes up, my
computer freezes up and the hdd goes wild, while Java tries to install
a new update.
But there's a vicious memory leak in the update, worse than I've ever
seen before - and I've been tolerating lesser memory leaks for years.
The first night I watched the memory leak get worse and worse before I
made up my mind to shut it down, thinking I was under attack by a
hacker. Last night I just turned it off right away.
There's no memory leak in the Update which I just performed.
If I were you I'd run a virus check immediately. You may have
inadvertently installed a virus/trojan which has been made to look like
a Java update.
Not only does this mean that I can't surf the net frem 3:30 to
whenever, but it also means that if I forget to take my PC off line
before I go to bed, who knows how badly damaged it will be when I get
up.
You can set in the Java control panel whether to notify before
downloading and/or installing. You can also set the frequency of checks
for updates, and the time of day when the check will be performed. So,
you can safely surf the net at any time if you set the freq/time of the
Java update check. You can also prevent any download occurring if you
set up the Update to ask before downloading.
Years ago I saw it was a problem when my ISP stopped provoding an
internet connection that timed out and automatically disconnected me
if I was away from the PC for too long, because bot writers would use
that time to try to break in.
They will use any time to attempt to break in. They don't watch you to
see when you've gone away and then try to sneak in when you are not
looking. To do that they'd have to have already broken in and accessed
your webcam.
Now the people who make Java are deliberately trying to ruin my
machine.
Hmmm, I doubt that.
They ought to be lined up against a wall and shot.
Then there would be no more updates...
It's a
wonder they have any customer loyalty at all, any more. What a bunch
of assholes!
Turn off updates, or just uninstall Java completely if you don't like
it. It's not compulsory. We're not customers as such, Java is freely
given and freely installed. You're just as free to decline it or remove it.
