I think you are forgetting the IE/MS solution to
that Eolas patent business, pop-up blockers,
possible applet/VM/browser interaction problems
(etcetera), as well as..

Measures must be taken to ensure 'the
minimum requirements are met, to launch
the application', in either case.
But you are placing unnecessary restrictions on those minimum requirements by
your use of Web Start rather than applets.
It is easier, with web-start.
It would be easier with a Windows-only approach, if "easy" is all you require.
But if what you really want is cross-platform, why restrict it unnecessarily by
using an method which is only provided on a subset of the Java platforms?
