Turns out java console was on "hide".

...I was under the wrong
impression that any exceptions would automatically cause
the console or another dialog box to pop up and say as much.
That is why 'getting a fresh eye' on the problem
is so useful. Usenet is valuable for that.
Anyway, I can see the exception now and realise now that
it was an old mistake I had previously fixed but never updated
the project's jar on the web server with.

My appologies it turned out to be such a simple oversight.

No apologies needed. And.. (whispers) you might well
find the original JNLP file works just fine - I just could not
resist 'optimizing' it. ;-)
