And it probably has noting to do with your installation of jvm.
From the OP's latter description, I would have to (almost)
agree (also with the crux of year earlier post, though I had
not seriously suspected something at the level of being in
the Windows Startup menu (or equivalent)).
That might (just) be an installation problem so it might
pay to simply check that 'Java works at all' on this PC.
To the OP (original poster). Here are links to two
relatively simple and safe things off my own site.
1) Here is a small Java applet slideshow.

This will check Java in your browser. Do you see
pictures of a city skyline and 'dome'?
2) Here is a simple little 'desktop' app.

You can 'skip' the desktop integration' if you
like, but do you see 'JotPad' application on
screen?
Both these projects are 1.4+ (somethingish)
but should be fine in 1.6.
