When I put 'mostly for the OP's benefit', it was
on the assumption that you were already aware of,
and had rejected using the deployJava.js script
for your own reasons.

But I think you should know that it is not only for
web start based (applications and) applets. It is
also designed for embedded applets.

On another matter, you mentioned the script uses
'browser sniffing' I checked it again and found you
are entirely correct.

That fact somewhat tarnishes the script, in my view.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I'd earlier checked through it and not detected any
'browser sniffing'. OTOH I cannot determine what would
cause Sun to write a script using feature detection,
yet later convert it to use browser sniffing, so I
am beginning to accept that you were right that even
the earliest versions used browser sniffing - and I
missed it.. My bad on that.
