FAT based operating systems didn't support streams. I think that NTFS added
this capability mostly to support the HFS stuff from Mac that had data and
resource forks, but it got used for other things. I've never used
StgOpenStorageEx, but I wouldn't be surprised if it took advantage of this
capability. Have you thought of just making your own database (like a
thumbs.db sort of thing) to store your meta-data so you don't have to
corrupt the original file?
