I didn't say one can't use MFC in a service if they know it
inside and out. I just stated Microsoft's long standing position
on the subject.

I thing that might be too strong a comment. Some areas of MFC
definitely do not belong in a service i.e. bascially anything which
requires a HWND or message pump etc but plain old classes such as
CString etc work absolutely fine. I've developed hundreds of services
in MFC and so long as you know what should and should not go in a
service, MFC is absolutely fine. For a complete class framework for
