But gcc suggests you are using a C compiler. Not everyone would have it, so it would be
hard to do a test. The exact contents of error messages are usually indicative of the
problem. I don't feel like pretending I'm a compiler to figure out what a compiler
thinks., particularly a compiler I haven't used in over 20 years (gcc).
And for those who have and know gcc, showing the command line used for the build is also
important.
For gcc it is quite simple: gcc -c file.c
In this case I named the test file as tester.c .
Geoff had read correctly and reasoned correctly, assuming that he does
have VS2010.
Apparently, VS2010 will see the .c extension and use the appropriate
preprocessor to feed to the C compiler.
Assuming that Geoff has VS2010, then the C compiler will not compile the
small source file, which means it now conforms to the ISO 90 standards.
SunPro C will compile the file without error. gcc will not. VC++1.0 and
VC++6.0 will without error. Running the program under 6.0 produces the
correct result. Just wanted to get a feel for VS2010 for consideration.
My old Sun sparc box is getting old and a contract renewal is around
$1200, which is out of the question. For $1200 I can get a decent PC
and VS2010 and not have to do a contract renewal in another year.

If you read my comments under the code, all would have been clear to you.
It works fine under VC++1.0 and VC++6.0. But does not compile without

The whole point is whether someone with VS2010 will compile the code or
not. If not, then it shows that MS has further made their C compiler
ISO compliant.

I am confused because you ask about something that compiles in VS C++, but the subject
line asks a question about C?
Please ask a coherent question, and note that any question which is of the form "why do I
get an error message" which is NOT accompanied by both the text of the error message and
an indication of what the line numbers are in the sample source will be treated as noise
and ignored.
The question was coherent. Did you try and compile the code?
