Hmmm. Then you're going to have to have some sort of file system.
Depending on how huge the file set will be you may be able to store it in
memory and just write it to disk when the user wants to save. That would
make it a lot faster to update. Otherwise, you're going to need some sort
of file system that would allow for modification like ISO with incremental
multi-session or UDF. I'd probably try to handle it in memory and only
write it out as needed to the single file output. The file set would have
to be pretty huge to not fit in memory assuming you're just storing the file
tree and not necessarily all of the data for the files.

Does this all have to be in one file? If not why not just use the OS
folder structure and read through it as needed at runtime using
CFileFind? You could store the whole path structure under one or more
parent folders and just read the stucture into memory at run time. To
back it up you could just copy the entire folder to some other place or
just use the parent folder to build a data CD or DVD (or one or more if
needed).
