Re: font names starting with @
The punctuation marks in your list are not the classic punctuation marks in
the character sets where vertical writing is classic. For languages where
vertical writing is classic, for punctuation marks which are classic in
those languages, punctuation marks look noticeably different in classic
writing than in horizontal writing.

Actually, for the classic punctuation marks in the set
~!`@#$%^&*()_-+={}[]:;"'<>?,./
the characters actually have the same orientation in both fonts, but the
horizontal
spacing of some is definitely different in the @-font. I did not explore
higher-order
punctuation marks. nor rotation effects.

There's more to it than spacing. As mentioned:

I just tried an experiment; I typed in a sample line into WordPad,
duplicated it, and set
one line to Arial Unicode MS and the other to @Arial Unicode MS. The
results are
interesting, because the horizontal spacing is definitely different for
some characters in
the @-font.

I agree that Arial Unicode MS should work fine for horizontal
formatting.
Similarly, @Arial Unicode MS should work fine for vertical formatting.
That's why the original poster asked about font names beginning with @,
right?

No, Arial Unicode MS works just fine for horizontal formatting; I have
used it in several
apps, including my Locale Explorer.

I am using EnumFontFamiliesEx() to get fonts available on a PC. Many
of
the font names start with the @ symbol (examp: @Arial Unicode MS).
Does
@
have some special meaning? Is it save to use that fonts?
Those fonts are used when writing vertically, from top to bottom and
right
to left. It is safe to use those fonts if you're writing vertically.
It
isn't safe to use them when writing horizontally, because punctuation
marks
look different in vertical writing than in horizontal writing.
