I've had this happen a few times. It might be the Intellisense updating
that is taking the time. I've also had problems when there is a resource
(file or something) located on a network share that is not available
(offline) and that seems to use all the cycles Windows has to offer until a
few minutes later when it finally figures out it's not really there.
One way around the problem you're having, of course, is to shut down VS
while using something else. If you set it to load the last used project
automatically it wouldn't take too much time to get going again.

Once a week my VC71 IDE starts chewing on the processor and I'm forced to
shut it down with the task manager. I've let it run for a few minutes but
in never returns. It seems that it happens when I put the window into
focus after working in other tools for a while. Anyone else seen the
issue?
I'm running an AthlonXP with 1 GB RAM.
