do a google for 'what every programmer should know about floating
point'

That is ''what every computer scientist should know about floating
point'

There are two articles, by two different authors:

What every computer scientist...
http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~dws/grouplinks/floating_point_math.pdf

What every computer programmer...
http://blogs.sun.com/darcy/resource/Wecpskafpa-ACCU.pdf

The former is very formal and scientific, not for the faint of heart.
The latter is much more accessible, with nice pictures and examples. To
one not familiar with the topic, I recommend starting with the second
article and, if more information is needed or curiosity is piqued,
progress on to the first.

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not
necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to
land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly
overhead. -- RFC 1925
