I'm coming to the thread a little late (been away for a couple of days), but
I think you'll find learning MFC will help you with any kind of application.
There are some handy things built in that are useful for console
applications as well:

That said, most MFC programs I've done have windows. We have done a few NT
services using MFC that have GUIs that normally don't display, but are handy
when we do need them. You may find your application growing into a full GUI
at some point and then have MFC will certainly be useful.
