Obviously, it doesn't work like that. For example, look at CBFalconer's
profile on Google Groups:
http://groups.google.com/groups/profile?hl=en&enc_user=gwXPwRQAAACn7HzP-mJiYAEMdh972S7_OPANdqfI6prRsqjc7uCt1A
He has 13,721 messages to comp.lang.c. Narrowing it down to only those
messages he's posted to microsoft.public.vc.mfc, we have:
http://groups.google.com/groups/profile?hl=en&show=more&enc_user=gwXPwRQAAACn7HzP-mJiYAEMdh972S7_OPANdqfI6prRsqjc7uCt1A&group=microsoft.public.vc.mfc
He's posted three times to microsoft.public.vc.mfc. Two of those posts are
in this thread, which is crossposted to comp.lang.c. As expected, the third
one was also crossposted to both comp.lang.c and microsoft.public.vc.mfc,
among many other groups. Clearly, he does not read microsoft.public.vc.mfc.
Indeed, half the guys replying to this thread are the sort that disdain
anything that is not The Standard, especially when it involves the word
"Microsoft", and so would never follow a group like this.
As for the guy you just replied to, Richard Bos, there are 55 messages to
comp.lang.c and 1 to microsoft.public.vc.mfc, his reply to this thread.
Looking at Richard Heathfield, there are 7,363 messages to comp.lang.c and
7 to microsoft.public.vc.mfc, all 7 of which are also crossposted to
comp.lang.c. In fact, 5 of the 7 are due to the OP of this thread,
karthikbalaguru, cross-posting off-topic general C questions to
microsoft.public.vc.mfc. Looking at karthikbalaguru, there are 200 messages
posted to comp.lang.c, dating back to Aug-2007, and 11 to
microsoft.public.vc.mfc, dating back to Feb-2009. He started a couple of
threads in microsoft.public.vc.mfc in Feb-2009, but since then, he has
crossposted to comp.lang.c and microsoft.public.vc.mfc. Based on this,
there's an excellent chance he's stopped reading microsoft.public.vc.mfc,
but it's a certainty the other three posters I mentioned do not read
microsoft.public.vc.mfc, so when you cut comp.lang.c and reply to any of
them, you are talking to the air. I think I've commented on this before,
and I'm doing so again because I continue to not understand why you would
want to publicly reply to someone and in the process eliminate any chance
of them hearing you. It appears you aren't aware this is what's happening
when you trim groups in the way that you do, and I hope I've presented a
convincing argument that it is. Anyway, I can't present a /better/ one
without polling the other participants in this thread, which I'm not going
to do, so I guess I don't have anything more to say on the matter. :)
