Re the observation, I've checked and indeed the space is missing in many
articles' banner delimiter. There seems to be no obvious pattern, such as
earlier bungled sig delimiter or not, which moderator, headers, path, or what.
Re the idea, we implemented it one or two years ago in the centralized server
scripts -- although now it seems that the implementation has developed some
bugs (programs, even when left alone, very often develop bugs).
By the way, the way this is intended to work is that if the poster has supplied
a valid signature delimiter, then it's left as-is. If no valid signature
delimiter is present, then one is inserted (before the banner). Unfortunately
those posting via Google Groups cannot post with valid signature delimiters,
since the Google Groups web interface, for reasons (if any) known only to
Google, actively removes the trailing space of a signature delimiter (this,
however, has no bearing on the problem you reported, except that it's related).
In summary, there is a bug, somewhere.
