What if I start hijacking every thread, and instead of answering
anyone's question, I just go off in a completely different direction
with it? Someone wants to know how to best read data from an Oracle
database? Great, I will just go off on a diatribe about how MySQL is a
much better way to store data, and in now way ever answer their
question. Same principle.
Not the same principle. If you were going to apply the same principle,
you would be looking for threads where you think you can help, and
posting your best attempt at contributing to the discussion. You have
different views from some posters on how that should be done, so your
responses should be particularly valuable.
Your choice of database selection is an odd coincidence. A little while
back, I posted a question in comp.lang.java.programmer about a problem I
was having reading data in a Java program from a MySQL database. As well
as answers to that question, I got advice against MySQL. After some more
discussion, I switched to PostgreSQL.
The advice to change DBM was even more useful to me than the pointer
to an explanation of my problem and a MySQL workaround.
There were also some answers that were not directly relevant to my
situation (commercial licensing issues with MySQL, a suggestion of a
size-limited DBM). Although those answers did not help me directly, they
were a valid part of a discussion that had morphed into database selection.
