Re: newbie to database learning
I think the real question you need to ask yourself is _what_
you need to be doing. If it is just a learning exercise then
you need to look at all of the above approaches, even those
not recommended, since you have no idea what you'd use
on a real project. Let me list some database technologies
(which are just frameworks for programming with databases)
that I know of (and the list is definitely not comprehensive):
ODBC, OLE DB, ADO, ADO.NET, JDBC. As far as web
development, in addition to ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, there are
also: Java, Ruby, Perl, Python, ECMAScript (aka JavaScript
used for client-side web development and the foundation for
AJAX), etc. If you find the above selection (and again it is not
comprehensive as I'm sure there are many other choices)
dazzling, perhaps it's time to focus on one branch and stick
with it. You just can't know everything about database
programming in today's diverse environments. Since you
are asking in Microsoft newsgroups, you may want to focus
on what the hype is these days in the Microsoft world: .NET.
E.g. you'd need to learn ADO.NET and ASP.NET. Note
that this group is clearly off topic for you. And so is the
newtorking group where I stumbled upon another misplaced
post of yours...
