Where I always get caught is on debugging. Every time I have a problem that
"only happens on this machine" I either have to load Visual Studio on that
system (probably an infringement of the license, but I always remove it
right after) and/or just keep running my application while it complains
about the many debug DLLs that are needed and copy them as I either think of
them or it identifies them. Fortunately, I don't have to do this very
often.

Yeah, that sounds like exactly what would be expected. You are probably
living in a world
in which you think that "copy" is sufficient for installing a program, and
that hasn't
been true for about 15 years. You need to use an installer, which will
assure that all of
the required DLLs are installed.

You don't need to "register" MFC71.DLL, you only need to make sure it, and
perhaps a dozen
others, are on the machine (static linking can work to eliminate the MFC
and CRT DLLs, but
it won't handle the other dozen).

VS.NET comes with an option to build an installer job and create an
install image, and you
have to use that.
