You are right that there are a lot of, um, extensions to Perl. I can't
argue with that, but I found the basic syntax is very similar to C and that
helped me learn it quickly. I also like how you can lay out whole pages of
HTML and have it substitute in variables. It isn't as nice as ASP, by any
means, but it's a lot easier to get started.

I've never really used PHP much so I'll take your word on it being nice. I
mostly use ASP.NET for web scripting, but all of our servers are on Windows
platforms so that makes that doable.

One bad thing about Perl, and I assume PHP is that it runs a separate
instance of the script for each round trip to the server. So if you have a
lot of users that could be a resource problem, but I've never noticed much
since the Perl script runner works really fast.

I have never learned Python or Perl, but I am starting to learn PHP
because I want to rewrite my (Unix hosted) web site using it.

What do people think of PHP as a general purpose scripting language
(Python/Perl replacement)?

I use Perl for about 10 years now, and I would not say is like C :-)
Most of my Perl stuff looked like C in the beginning.
But using it this way is underusing it :-)

I would say Perl is very powerfull as general scripting language,
with great colection of modules and good access to the OS, if needed.
Especially since it was designed originally for sys-admins :-)

While PHP is designed from ground-up for web, and looks a lot like
JSP/ASP.
Now I am at the stage where I write PHP like C or Perl :-)
I don't find it as powerfull as Perl, in general, but I find it
easier to do web stuff with it that with Perl.

So I would say that if a scripting language feels better for web
after toying with it for some weeks that a scripting language
I am using for 10 years, then it probably is better for web :-)
