Using Google groups web interface, it seems to me that there are also more
problems, and I'm missing some threads and some posts...
For example, in this thread:
"Thread termination behavior"

using Windows Mail and msnews server, I can only read OP's post and your
reply, as shown in this screenshot I took:

Instead, Google groups web interface shows more replies (including Joe's and
AliR's reply).
Moreover, this thread does not appear at all in my client (!?):
"MDI Implementation"
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.vc.mfc/browse_thread/thread/b6017f4ea5bd889f#
That is odd...
There are a number of possible reasons for this, and the answer is for
everyone to consider msnews *THE* news server for Microsoft support groups
and use it directly. Back when I was having my problem with AT&T, I was
told that msnews doesn't peer with many servers, causing poor propagation,
while other servers "slurped" the msnews groups. This created false
expectations, because while you could read MS groups on AT&T, you couldn't
reliably post to MS groups such that msnews would retrieve your posts.
Thus, people using msnews directly wouldn't see many of my posts. Using
msnews directly isn't really an issue anymore, since most newsreaders
support multiple servers. Back in '98 or so, Forte Agent did not, and one
had to run separate instances of the program for each different server you
wanted to use, which took up space on the taskbar and was a little
inconvenient. For a while, I used a method I developed which involved me
saving the messages I wanted to post to a text file, and I used Perl to
separate the messages and post them directly to msnews. This let me read
AT&T in one instance of Agent but post to msnews using Perl. After a few
months of that tedium, I surrendered and began to use a separate instance
of Agent just for msnews. Sometime later, Forte resumed work on Agent,
added multiple server capabilities, and now I have one Agent for all the
servers I use. Microsoft is not the only company that runs effectively
private news servers that aren't really part of Usenet, so it really is
necessary to use the company-specific servers, even if your ISP "slurps"
them, because the messages you post may not make it to the company-specific
servers.
